Biographie

Edith Brown Weiss has been University Professor and Frances Cabell Brown Professor of International Law at Georgetown University.  Since 2012, she has been a Judge on the Administrative Tribunal of the International Monetary Fund and previously served as President and Vice President of the Inter-American Development Bank’s Administrative Tribunal. In 2002, she was appointed for a five year term to the World Bank Inspection Panel and from 2003-2007 served as the Chairperson, an appointment at the level of World Bank Vice President.  She was the President of the American Society of International Law from 1994-1996.  From 1990-1992, she was Associate General Counsel for International Law at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where she established a new Division of International Law.  She was a U.S. Special Legal Advisor to the North American Commission on Environment from 1996-2002 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Japanese Institute for Global Environmental Strategies,  among other international positions.  She has served on editorial  boards for 19 international law journals and the advisory board for the Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public  International Law.  She was a member of several boards/commissions of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences/National Reserach Council and UNEP’s International Advisory Council on Environmental Justice.

 

She has received many honors, including the Manley O. Hudson Medal from the American Society of International Law, a Doctorate Honoris Causa from Heidelberg University, the Elizabeth Haub Medal from the IUCN and Free University of Brussels,  the American Bar Association’s Louis B Sohn Award for life-time contributions to public international law, the ABA’s Award for distinguished achievement in environmental law, and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Chicago-Kent College of Law, The Indian Society of International Law elected her as an Honorary Member in 2009.
